Railway

Background

In the time period from 1971 until 1996, investigations of serious railway accidents were conducted by an investigation team at the largest railway operator (de danske statsbaner - DSB) in Denmark. The team referred to the director general of DSB.

In 1996, an independent railway authority (in Danish - Jernbanetilsynet) was established.

In 2004, in accordance with the European railway safety directive and in order to conduct independent railway investigations, the responsibility and the authority were transferred the Accident Investigation Board - Aviation and Railway (AIB).

The Railway Unit

The AIB Railway Unit (RU) consists of three employees; a head of the Railway Unit, a senior investigator, and an investigator.
